Integrated Site Characterization for Selection of Design Parameters

Presenter: Dr. Jason DeJong, UC Davis

This half-day short course presents an integrated, comprehensive approach to geotechnical site characterization and the selection of parameters for project analysis and design. The course is designed for both young, practicing engineers developing their site investigation skills as well as project level engineers that are managing site investigations and overseeing selection of design parameters.  The course will begin by analyzing results from a recent geotechnical insurance claims study which revealed that site investigation related issues is the most common basis for insurance claims.  This will be followed by describing an integrated site characterization approach that includes developing a geologic model, identifying mechanisms controlling performance, selecting tools and designing a site investigation program, analyzing and synthesizing the data, idealizing the site conditions, and selecting representative engineering values for analysis and design.  Content will also include evaluating uncertainty in the interpreted stratigraphic structure and quantifying the variation of engineering measurements. Coverage of each topic will focus on recommended best practices with the end goals of improved design, reduced costs, and mitigated risk.

About the presenter:

Jason T. DeJong is a Professor at the University of California, Davis.  He received a B.S.C.E. from UC Davis and an M.S.C.E. and Ph.D. at the Georgia Institute of Technology.  After working at the Centre for Offshore Foundation Systems at the University of Western Australia and the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Jason moved back to his hometown of Davis, CA in 2005. Jason’s primary research areas include site characterization, gravelly soils, intermediate soils, sustainable geotechnical practice, earthquake engineering, and biogeotechnics.  Results from his research program have been disseminated through more than 125 publications.  Jason is also actively engaged with industry in implementing research advancements into practice. Jason’s contributions have been recognized through the ASTM International Hogentogler Award (2x), ICE TK Hsieh Prize, ASCE Huber Research Prize, ASCE Casagrande Professional Development Award, Prakash Research Award, and ICE Telford Premium Prize.
