Session 1: Rammed Aggregate Pier Installation & Quality Control, Aaron Bishop, Western Ground Improvement/GeoPier

This presentation will focus on the quality control aspects of rammed aggregate piers.  Theory and application will be discussed for context.

Session 2: Pre-Task Planning, Matt Boos, Terracon

Pre-Task Planning is the process of examining all hazards prior to starting work.   These usually start with a Job Hazard Analysis or Job Safety Analysis or Tool Box Talk, I apply the common sense approach so that everyone is a participant in the review and is encouraged to say something if they see something.

It centers around active listening and situational awareness.  Everyone brings something to the table and shares.  

Session 3: Communication in the Construction Environment, Eric Swenson, Geo-Engineering Solutions

Session 4: Risk management & review of important cases and analyses affecting geotechnical professionals, Gary Jacobsen Esq., Koenig Jacobsen LLP

The scope of Mr. Jacobsen's presentation will address risk management for geotechnical engineers and a review of the most significant cases directly affecting geotechnical professionals. The overview will address important issues and matters including risk management, contractual provisions/language; privity of contract; economic loss rules, mediation/arbitration agreements, assignments, duty of care/standard of care and significant legal trends.

12:00pm Conclusion, survey collection and PDH/CEU certificates

About the Speakers:

Aaron Bishop, Western Ground Improvement

Aaron Bishop, P.E., is a Senior Project Manager for Western Ground Improvement (WGI) with over 10 years of geotechnical engineering experience.  Since joining WGI in 2013, he has provided feasibility, budgeting and project management services on hundreds of ground improvement projects across California.




Matt Boos, Terracon

Matt Boos is a Corporate Safety Professional for the Western Operating Group for Terracon Consultants based in the Kansas City area.  Previously he owned an independent safety and environmental consulting firm serving clients throughout the United States. He is a Certified Sustainability Manager and a Specialist in Emergency Management.

Eric Swenson, Geo-Engineering Solutions

Eric Swenson, GE, CEG, is a Geotechnical Engineer and Engineering Geologist who has been practicing in California for over 30 years.  He has worked on the design and construction of projects as small as single family residences to major dams, schools, and hospitals.  In Geotechnical complexity he has worked in ground improvement, deep foundations, soft soils, shoring and underpinning, and all assortment of shallow foundation projects.    He earned a BA in Geology form UC Berkeley and an MSCE from San Jose State University.   He has held a variety of positions starting as a laboratory technician breaking concrete cylinders up to president of an engineering firm.  In 2016 he started his own geotechnical engineering practice, Geo-Engineering Solutions Inc.  

Gary Jacobsen, Partner at Koenig Jacobsen LLP

The primary focuses of Mr. Jacobsen’s practice are professional liability and environmental matters.  He is a frequent speaker at seminars involving design professionals, contractors and environmental issues.  He specializes in the representation of architects, engineers and contractors in construction litigation. Mr. Jacobsen has successfully argued appeals before the California Appellate Court.  Based upon his extensive trial record, he is a member of the prestigious American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA).  Due to the strength of his reputation and practice, he has received a Martindale-Hubbell AV Peer Review Rating. San Diego Magazine recently named Mr. Jacobsen one of the Top Lawyers in San Diego for Ethical Standards & Professional Excellence.
