July Emerging Professionals Meeting

Soil Nails – Application, Design and Construction Considerations

Presented by Andy Bowman, Sr. Project Development Engineer for GSI

Under certain site conditions and geometries, soil nails and soil nail-wall systems can provide an economical option to stabilizing landslides, soil slopes, and retaining structures such as reinforced concrete and MSE retaining walls.  This presentation will begin with discussing what makes a soil nail a “soil nail”, when soil nail systems should be considered, details of the soil and site geometry information needed for design, and design concepts and methodologies.  Information will then be provided regarding typical equipment and approaches used for construction and installation of these systems, and limited access applications.  Finally, as time allows, project examples will be presented and discussed; from obtaining the initial site information through design and construction, to the final in-place repair system.

About the Speaker:

Andy is GeoStabilization’s Project Development Engineer for California and Nevada. After earning both his BSCE and MSCE (with geotechnical emphasis) from San Diego State University, Andy spent the first decade of his career analyzing slope failures, landslide stability and bluff retreat all throughout Southern California. Within the last several years, Andy has categorized and provided repair recommendations for landslides and slope failures in CA, NV, AZ, UT, CO, NM, WY, ND, and SD. With over thirty-one years of consulting geotechnical, construction materials testing, and civil engineering experience, he has provided geotechnical consultation for all phases of both private and public works projects, focused mainly on large transportation, flood control, and utility projects. Andy has also directly managed operations of several offices within a multi-state region for a national geotechnical consulting firm and has served as a guest lecturer for various engineering technical and ethics classes at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
