ASCE Geo-Institute San Francisco Chapter: Geotechnical Instrumentation and Monitoring Workshop

San Francisco Geo-Institute (SFGI) will be hosting a virtual Instrumentation and Monitoring Workshop via Zoom. The workshop will be held across two one-hour sessions delivered on February 9th and 16th from 12 to 1 PM. The two-part workshop is intended to present perspectives from both academia and industry, with the first session delivered by Kenichi Soga (UC Berkeley) and the second session delivered by Paul Thurlow (Geo-Instruments). Workshop attendees will get an overview of geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring techniques and case histories demonstrating the implementation of these techniques.

Session 1: “The Role of Distributed Sensing in Understanding the Engineering Performance of Geotechnical Structures” Presented by Dr. Kenichi Soga

Engineering design limits are often based on strain and/or stress developing in the structure. For structures interacting with soil (e.g. underground infrastructure such as foundations, tunnels or pipelines), the ground loads are distributed spatially (i.e. not point loads) and hence the state of the structure will be better understood if the complete in situ strain regime (or displacement profile) is known. An innovative distributed fiber optic strain measurement system allows having thousands of “strain gauges” along a single cable connected to structures, embedded in soil or grouted into boreholes. Because of the simple and quick installation technique, distributed optical fiber sensing can be as practical as other conventional measurements. The talk will present several case studies that utilize distributed strain sensing to understand the engineering performance of piles and retaining walls. Engineering insights obtained from the data interpretation and numerical analysis are presented.

Kenichi Soga is the Donald H. McLaughlin Professor in Mineral Engineering and a Chancellor’s Professor at the University of California, Berkeley. He is also a faculty scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He has published more than 400 journal and conference papers and is the co-author of "Fundamentals of Soil Behavior, 3rd edition" with Professor James K Mitchell. He is a Fellow of the UK Royal Academy of Engineering, the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). He is the chair of ASCE Infrastructure Resilience Division’s Emerging Technologies committee and the Technical Committee TC105 "Geotechnics from Micro to Macro" of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering. He is a Bakar Fellow of UC Berkeley, promoting commercialization of smart infrastructure technologies.

Session 2: “Geotechnical Instrumentation and Monitoring – Current Trends” Presented by: Paul Thurlow, Geo-Instruments

This session will provide an overview of some of the latest geotechnical and structural instrumentation techniques that enable safe, reliable and economic data capture. Using the Observational Method with instrumentation can provide efficient project delivery, value engineering and design verification. This presentation provides a unique insight into practical considerations such as planning, selection and delivery with real world examples of the above.

Paul Thurlow has 38 years of practical and managerial experience in all aspects of geotechnical engineering and instrumentation as a contractor from across the world. He has always had a passion for using instrumentation to safely deliver and value engineer projects. He has published papers on a variety of geotechnical/instrumentation subjects as well as contributing to national standards. Paul is Vice President of Geo-Instruments (a Keller company) based in California.
