July Emerging Professionals MeetingSoil Nails – Application, Design and Construction ConsiderationsPresented by Andy Bowman, Sr. Project Development Engineer for GSI Under certain site conditions and geometries, soil nails and soil nail-wall systems can provide an economical option to stabilizing landslides, soil slopes, and retaining structures such as reinforced concrete and MSE retaining walls. This presentation will begin with discussing what makes a soil nail a “soil nail”, when soil nail systems should be considered, details of the soil and site geometry information needed for design, and design concepts and methodologies. Information will then be provided regarding typical equipment and approaches used for construction and installation of these systems, and limited access applications. Finally, as time allows, project examples will be presented and discussed; from obtaining the initial site information through design and construction, to the final in-place repair system.
